How to Store Wood Pellets This Winter

Wood Pellet Winter Storage

Heating season is nearly here. You’ve likely got your pellets ordered. Whether you buy a few bags at a time or stock up with several tons for the entire heating season, proper pellet storage is essential to keep your fuel dry and efficient.

Consider these pellet storage best practices to ensure your purchase is protected from the first burn of the season to the last.

How many pellets will you need?
The average home burns 2 to 4 tons of heating pellets each winter, or approximately 100 to 200 standard 40-pound bags. Buying a pallet is often the most economical option but storing that much fuel requires space and a little planning.

Keep Pellets Dry
Moisture is the biggest enemy of wood pellets. When pellets absorb humidity or water, they expand, lose their shape and can create serious auger jams or poor combustion. Once pellets become soft or swollen, they cannot be restored and you’ll have to discard them.

Choose the Right Storage Location

Whenever possible, store pellets in a dry, temperature-stable indoor space, such as:

●      A garage

●      Utility room

●      Pantry

●      Basement

●      Heated workshop

●      Shed

If you use a shed, make sure it’s completely weatherproofed and well ventilated. Avoid damp basements, crawl spaces, or areas prone to flooding or condensation.

No room inside? No problem. Thousands of our customers store pellets outdoors all year. The key is a high, dry spot with an intact protective layer like a weighted down tarp.

Keep Pellet Bags Elevated
Never store pellets directly on concrete. It naturally pulls moisture from the ground, even when it appears dry. Keeping bags elevated helps prevent moisture from damaging the bottom layer of pellets.

Place pellet bags on:

●      Wooden pallets

●      Plastic skids

●      Heavy-duty storage racks

Store Bulk Pellets Safely
Proper stacking protects both your fuel and your storage space. For the best results:

●      Stack bags in a crisscross pattern to improve stability

●      Limit stacks to four or five bags high

●      Leave 3 to 6 inches of space between the stack and exterior walls for better airflow.

●      Verify that the floor where you’re storing the pellets can safely support the weight of multiple pallets.

Use Airtight Containers
Even if most of your supply is in the garage or shed, keep a few bags inside so you’re not heading out in the snow every time the hopper runs low. Give a cold bag time to warm up before you open it so moisture doesn’t condense on the pellets. Then transfer the pellets into a sealed storage container. Heavy-duty plastic bins or 5-gallon buckets with tight-fitting lids help :

●      Keep moisture out

●      Reduce dust

●      Make it easier to load your stove

●      Keep pellets clean

Some pellet storage bins even include mesh screens that separate fine sawdust from usable pellets before they reach your stove.

Use Oldest Pellets First
If you purchase multiple pallets during the season, label them by delivery date. A simple first-in, first-out system helps ensure every bag stays as fresh as possible.

Keep Pellets Away from Heat Sources
Pellets should never be stored close to:

●      Pellet stoves

●      Wood stoves

●      Furnaces

●      Water heaters

●      Fire pits

●      Grills

●      Direct sunlight

Maintaining safe clearances reduces fire risk and helps prevent condensation caused by temperature swings.

Check Pellet Quality
Before filling your hopper, take a quick look at the pellets.

Healthy pellets should:

●      Have a smooth, shiny surface

●      Feel hard and dense

●      Break with a clean, sharp snap

Discard pellets that are:

●      Soft

●      Swollen

●      Crumbly

●      Damp

●      Excessively dusty

A little attention now will help your pellet stove operate more efficiently and keep your home warm all winter long.
